University of Yamanashi Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Research (Zero Emission MIRAI Research Center) Faculty Recruitment – Distinguished Researcher / Distinguished Young Researcher
The University of Yamanashi was selected in FY2025 for the “Regional Core and Distinctive Research University Strengthening Promotion Project (J-PEAKS)” and has newly established the Zero Emission MIRAI Research Center as a core hub. This center aims to form a world-leading research hub in the field of materials and energy, with green hydrogen as its central focus.
To achieve this goal, we are widely recruiting researchers from Japan and overseas who possess outstanding research capabilities in the relevant fields.
Number of Positions
Several positions each for Distinguished Researcher and Distinguished Young Researcher.
Expected Start Date
As early as possible on or after April 1, 2026.
Employment Type
Full-time position (fixed-term appointment: 4 years, within the J-PEAKS project period).
There is a possibility of transition to a tenured position based on performance evaluation.
Field of Specialization
Materials, energy, and related areas involved in the production and utilization of green hydrogen (including mathematical and data science fields).
Job Description
- Management of a laboratory as a principal investigator.
- Participation in the management of the Zero Emission MIRAI Research Center.
- Responsibilities related to events associated with J-PEAKS.
Qualifications
- Must possess a doctoral degree (including degrees granted by foreign institutions equivalent to a doctoral degree).
- Must have the ability to lead an independent laboratory and possess internationally distinguished research competence and achievements equivalent to the level of professor or associate professor.
- Must have sufficient English communication skills.
- No age limit for Distinguished Researcher. Applicants for Distinguished Young Researcher are generally expected to be under 40 years of age.
Treatment
Salary:
?Salary will be determined in accordance with the University of Yamanashi’s special regulations for specially appointed faculty members at the Zero Emission MIRAI Research Center.
?Approximate annual salary:
Distinguished Researcher: around 20 million yen (including social insurance and taxes). Distinguished Young Researcher: around 10 million yen (including social insurance and taxes). If the above results in lower compensation than the applicant’s previous salary, adjustments may be made taking into account cost of living at the previous location, as well as the candidate’s academic background, expertise, and achievements. For particularly outstanding researchers, the annual salary may exceed the above range. No bonus or retirement allowance will be provided.
Research Environment:
?In addition to salary, annual research funds will be provided as follows:
Distinguished Researcher: 20 million yen per year. Distinguished Young Researcher: 10 million yen per year.
?Additional start-up funds will be provided separately to establish a new laboratory.
Work System:
?Working hours: Discretionary labor system (deemed as 7 hours 45 minutes per day).
?Holidays: Saturdays, Sundays, national holidays, summer holidays, year-end and New Year holidays.
?Leave: Annual paid leave, special leave, etc.
In principle, this is a full-time exclusive position; however, cross-appointment arrangements can be discussed upon request.
Social Insurance:
Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Mutual Aid Association, employment insurance, labor insurance, housing allowance, commuting allowance.
Housing:
Depending on availability, university staff housing may be provided.

Either one recommendation letter or Names and contact information of two referees who can provide opinions on the applicant’s achievements, etc. (Not required for Distinguished Researcher applicants.)

Recruitment will be closed once suitable candidates have been hired.
Selection Method
After the first screening based on submitted documents, successful candidates will proceed to a second screening involving an interview.
Final decisions will be made through relevant committee discussions.
